Basic Pita bread

IMG_3390.jpeg

Pita bread is a very popular Middle Eastern type of pocket flatbread. We usually bought fresh pita bread in bakeries , straight from the oven.

In general, I am not big on freezing. Still, you can freeze pita as long as it’s still fresh.

  • 4 c flour

  • 1 tbsp + ½ tsp dry yeast

  • 3 tbsp oil

  • 1 tbsp sugar

  • 1 tsp. salt

  • About 2 c lukewarm water

  1. Mix all ingredients in a mixer. Start with 1 ½ c of water and add more if you need. The dough should be elastic but not runny.

  2. knead for 10 minutes. Let the dough rest for 10 minutes, covered.

  3.  Divide it into 8-9 balls and let the dough rest for 5 more minutes.

  4.  Roll each ball out just a little bit into a round flat bread (the pita shouldn’t be too thin).

5. Cook in a skillet on stove top (no need to grease it) 1-2 minutes on each side. Try not to burn the pita.
